Basically, radicals are merely molecules that look like organic molecules, such as amino acids and sugars. They are made up of repeating units called 'hydrogens' and they are generally made up of carbon atoms that are unpaired.If you were to look at a small atom, you would be able to tell that it is composed of two atoms of oxygen and one of hydrogen. If this nucleus was removed from the molecule, we would not be able to see the two atoms, because the atoms would be tightly bound together. However, when the molecule is broken down into smaller molecules, the atoms would be exposed.Rancid Chemistry is a real problem for those who work in the fields of bioanalysis, molecular biology, and biochemistry. These scientists have to make use of Hodge's law to control the amount of radicals that are produced by the body. This law states that the rate of c reation of free radicals is proportional to the level of oxidants (other molecules) present in the body.Those who are working in the field of medicine must know that free radicals are a factor that might cause cancer and other diseases. To control the rate of production of radicals, scientists have developed many formulas to create or inhibit the radicals. The most common form of these formulas is antioxidants. These antioxidants have anti-oxidant activity that prevents radicals from forming.As an example, vitamin C helps to stop the production of radicals. A very important antioxidant for the body is beta carotene. While other antioxidants are present, beta carotene is considered to be the best antioxidant that exists.Numerous drugs that are used for chemotherapy, surgery, and other major drugs have been proven to help in the prevention of the formation of radicals. Thus, some of the newest drugs that are being developed are being designed to effectively block the effect of radical s on the human body. This will significantly lower the rate of production of radicals.It is also important to realize that the primary damage that occurs in the body when radicals are present is that they cause DNA damage. Because the DNA consists of repeated units, damage can occur at multiple locations in the DNA strand. When the DNA is damaged, it can lead to cancer and other diseases.As you can see, the production of radicals in the body is very complicated. Even if we wanted to work directly with the molecules of the radicals, it would be very difficult to actually get them out of the body.
